Today I had my first go at sowing the seed for this grand plan with some of the usual suspects. In a night out with Pete, Lawrence and Shunt and propose that 2010 should be the year for this particular expedition. Shunt says it sounds great, put me down. Pete immediately does his usual and starts to question the details - "How will you get bikes to Wales? Where will we sleep? How will we eat?" Not in a bad way, but in the way he and I usually do when bouncing some of my more demanding ideas off each other.
Lawrence asks why it has to be bikes - "I like boats and rivers. You can just sit still in a boat and drift with the flow. Why bikes? Sounds a bit like hard work".

If not top to bottom, what about side to side?
After a bit of research I think I've found the next best thing. If John O'Groats to Lands End is too far, how about West Coast to East Coast? St Davids on the west coast of Wales to Lowestoft on the east coast of England is approximately 400 miles. At 50-60 miles a day that could be done in a week, couldn't it?

Time for an expedition, what to do this time?
After a year of weddings (7 in all for me, which included my own, two as best man, one as an usher, one on the same day as my 30th birthday and 5 stag weekends) it's time to plan what could be the last major trip in the near future. Not the last major trip, but I think we've reached a point in life where a few of us are going to start having other people to consider in our lives.
In a change to canoe trips, which we've done previously, I fancy a bike ride. A couple of years back I considered maybe the John O'Groats - Lands End, but we really will nedd 2 weeks minimum for that. So what else is out there ...
